Broncos Finish 3rd at District – Clerihew Advances

The Denton Bronco tennis team finished 3rd in the District 4-4A Tennis Tournament held in Denton April 2 and 3.   Denton High School junior Alex Clerihew advanced to the regional tournament as as the district 4-4A runner up in Boys Singles.  Clerihew faced the second ranked player in the state, Wichita Falls Rider’s Conner Curry, in the finals of the tournament.  Curry, a sophomore at Rider, had not lost a game in the district 4-4A tournament until facing Clerihew.  Curry defeated Clerihew 6-2, 6-0 as Alex claimed 2 games in the match.

Alex Clerihew and Denton Ryan’s Marti Gay were the only players to advance from outside of Wichita Falls.  Wichita Falls High and Wichita Fall Rider together claimed a 8 of the 10 regional tournament spots.  Denton High finished 3rd in the team scores and Ryan High 4th.  Team scores were based on total winning matches in the tournament.

Alex Clerihew advance to the regional tournament in Abilene April 16 and 17 for the right to go to the state tournament in Austin.
